SS Thistlegorm
A merchant navy ship, the SS Thistlegorm sank in October 1941 whilst on "safe" anchorage in the Straits of Gubal awaiting passage through the Suez canal. The Thistlegorm was carrying supplies to the British troops in North Africa. Her cargo included medicines, hospital beds, rifles, shells, motorcycles, trucks, Bren gun carriers, two locomotives, railway freight cars, generators and aircraft wings. She was bombed by German planes searching for a large ship carrying British troops. Low on fuel, the bombers spotted the Thistlegorm anchored and sitting low in the water due to it's cargo. Two bombs were dropped, causing the Thistlegorm to sink. The Thistlegorm stands in approximately 30 metres of water and is visited by thousands of divers every year.
